Weighing or calculating the precise amount of sodium carbonate to be used requires that allowance be made for any humidity or carbon dioxide which it has absorbed.
The working part of the weighing and measuring equipment must be protected from dust. Equipment which is specially designed for calculating the quantities of non-cohesive materials is therefore recommended.
The temperature of bulk sodium carbonate on delivery may be up to 90°C.
Precautions to be taken while handling
Sodium carbonate is neither toxic nor corrosive. However, sodium carbonate dust can cause temporary irritation of the skin, throat or eyes and a running nose. Precautions:
- wear lightweight face masks and goggles;
- if appropriate, use of protective creams. Remedies :
- in the event of irritation, dab the affected areas with a 2% solution of acetic acid or apply soothing creams based on zinc oxide;
- in the event of sodium carbonate getting into the eyes, wash with large quantities of water and consult an eye specialist.
In a damp environment
In a damp environment, the simultaneous presence of sodium carbonate and lime dusts can cause the formation of caustic soda which is likely to cause burns. Workers exposed to this risk must wear sealed goggles, protective clothing and face masks.
Dust extract ventilation
The inconvenience of working in a dusty atmosphere should be reduced as much as possible (sealing of the bulk handling installations); a dust extraction ventilating device should be provided at each emission point which cannot be eliminated (sack emptying points, etc.).
