Solvay is pursuing its growth strategy in new, added-value business lines based on know-how-intensive products for sophisticated markets. The constitution of a new Strategic Business Unit, Solvay Organics (SBU Molecular Solutions), in 2005 was a significant step in the implementation of this growth strategy.
Solvay Organics specializes in the field of organic chemistry. It brought together four business areas :
The peptides business of Peptisyntha, a wholly owned Solvay subsidiary, based in Belgium (Brussels) and United States (Torrance, CA)
The fine chemicals manufacturing units of Solvay’s facility in France (Salin-de-Giraud)
The organic Fluorine specialties business based in Germany (Bad Wimpfen)
Solvay’s holding in Girindus, Germany (Bensberg) and in the United States (Cincinnati, OH), which was the subject of a public bid in 2005. With Girindus, the SBU gained access to excellent manufacturing facilities for specialty organic chemicals, a highly educated scientific staff of organic chemists, process development professionals and the opportunity to assist in the development of Girindus’s oligonucleotides businesses.
Solvay, with this research-led entity, offers a range of innovative molecules, materials, services and solutions for novel applications. Its mastery of synthesis of active ingredients for pharmaceuticals is being deployed to new opportunities in renewable resources, in active organic chemicals for electronics applications, and in othe novel technologies, systems and devices incorporating organic molecules.
Solvay Organics is flexible. It can be a complete service provider with full scale-up and manufacturing capability, or a partner in alliance to achieve mutually agreed goals or a supplier of specialty products and services in organic chemistry. These includes synthesis of molecules, scale-up, further development of capability, effects and formulation, analysis, testing and configuration of new systems.
Girindus is a company independent of Solvay in which Solvay has a shareholding of 75 %.
