Ferric chloride is manufactured by the exothermic reaction between ferric oxide and hydrochloric acid as follows:
Fe2O3 + 6 HCl ® 3 H2O + 2 FeCl3
Ferric chloride, also known as iron(III)chloride, is mainly used as flocculent in waste water treatment. It promotes precipitation of heavy metals, phosphates and organic compounds. It also reacts with sulphur present in waste water, giving efficient odour control.
