The new generation hydrofluorocarbons HFC 125 (pentafluoroethane) and HFC 227ea (heptafluoropropane) are now used providing universal handling possibilities.

Similarly Solkaflam^® 125 and Solkaflam^® 227 are important halon substitutes, primarily in sectors where space and weigth are constrained, or speed of suppression is vital.

Once, there was Halon^®...

but with the Montreal Protocol conference from 1993, manufacturing of substances with Ozon Depleting Potential (ODP), including Halon 1301 (CBrF₃), Halon 1211 (CClF₂Br) and Halon 2201 (CHF₂Br), which were used as fire extinguishing agents, was banned. As a result EC Regulation 2037/2000 banned the use of halons in hand-held fire extinguishers and total flooding systems from December 31^st 2003.

Since the beginning of 2004 the use of halons is only permitted for critical applications with an exeption license and the refilling of halon containing systems is prohibited.

Accordingly, new systems based on nitrogen, argon and carbon dioxide were launched as “standard fire extinguishers„ and for special applications the new hydrofluorocarbons were launched.
