Glass

In constant use since ancient times, glass is still a highly valued material. Today, glass is a sophisticated product requiring state-of-art technologies. New grades of glass have been developed and, depending on their composition, distinctions can be made among approximately a dozen types of glass, which fall into the categories of hollow glass, flat glass and specialty glass.

Fiberglass

SODA SOLVAY® is used for the production of glass fibers which have a wide range of use including thermal insulation (as a substitute to materials such as mineral wool) and as reinforcement fibers for various materials. Additionally, SOLVAY Soda Ash is used for the production of technical glass,  as video screen and foam glass.

Flat Glass

Most flat glass used in the building and automotive industry is produced by the “float” process; a continuous production requiring reliable high quality raw materials. Today SODA SOLVAY® is supplied to float plants in many parts of the world. Ammoniumhydrogendifluoride is used in glass processing for matt etching of float glass sheets.

Manufacturing

The use of cryolite synthetic powder as an opacifying agent results in special aesthetic effects such as milk glass, out of which perfume flasks or lampshades can be made.

Packaging

SODA SOLVAY® is used in the production of container glass, which is highly valued for its aesthetic and organoleptic qualities as well as its recycling potential.

Speciality Glass

Several of our products are used for specialty glasses. Inorganic Fluorides in particular are used for the formulation for lenses and optical systems.

Surface Processing

Ammonium bifluoride can be used for frosting or matting glass surfaces. Trifluoracetic acid and trifluoracetic acid ethyl ester have recently been discovered for their insulating effects when used in glass surface treatment.
